That’s how I was.  For 25 years the thought of lung cancer, oxegyn tanks, intravenous tubes and painfully wasting away as my children looked helplessly down at me did not make me want to quit.  I knew I’d die sooner or later.  I laughed, “At least I can die happy.”  I thought, “I’m going to do what I want.  Nobody is going to tell me what to do. Not even God!”

 

Nobody can to tell you what to do?!  Are you so sure?

 

Then, someone said to me, “When the urge for a cigarette says ‘hop,’ you hop.  When the urge for a cigarette says ‘stop,’ you stop.”  He said, “Right now you are a slave and cigarettes are your master.”  He was right.  Without a cigarette, I couldn’t rest.  Without a cigarette, I couldn’t think about my next job duty.  Between the car and the office, I was always asking people to wait for me to finish a cigarette. If I couldn’t avoid a non-smoking place, before going in I would suck desperately on a cigarette like it was my last breath of air.    I would make excuses to leave meetings to go down 25 floors to the lobby and out the door just for one or two puffs of a cigarette.  If I didn’t have a cigarette and no one was watching, I would search my nasty ashtray for an old cigarette.  I was always too busy to do the family shopping, but when the urge for a cigarette demanded, “Now!”  I  would put on my coat, go out in the rain and walk five blocks for a pack.  What a joke!   I wasn’t free. I wasn’t happy.  I was just a helpless puppet on a string saying, “Yes, sir.  Yes, sir.” to cigarettes.  I was the “big, smart, intelligent” professor obeying the orders of a little cigarette!  When I realized this, I wanted to take back control of my life.
